Show your countryside alliance
When you think of contemporary style, it’s all about modern, fresh, urban themes.
And while these looks are certainly pretty striking, there’s so much more to fashion, especially this season as we look back in time to a more romantic view of the world, taking inspiration from rural life and the Great British countryside.
Vogue claimed during the autumn-winter 2012 shows that Downton Abbey had reinforced an idea of what it means to be English, although granted this probably represents only a very fine slice of society!
Designers took this look on board with jodhpurs, tweeds, Fair Isle knits and shiny leather boots, in an ode to horse riding and country classes.
Emma Elwick-Bates, Vogue’s market editor, even said: “The familiar country dress codes of plaid, corduroy and traditional tailoring were seen throughout the collections, with dramatic coats best played out in utility fabrics and earthy, autumnal colours.”
It’s clearly a huge trend, but how can you use your accessories to really show it off?
Floral jewellery is a year-round hit and right now there are so many styles to choose from.
I find that it makes the perfect antidote to the thick, traditional fabrics I’ve been wearing this winter and it’s nice to be able to quickly give my outfit a girly edge.
With my winter coat, scarves and hats, necklaces during the day are less prominent, so when I really want to draw attention to my jewellery I choose statement earrings or bracelets.
Right now I can’t stop wearing my new light burn gold metal flower cuff.
This burnished, antique gold bracelet has such a chic, vintage finish it perfectly fits the heritage theme, and with the addition of intricate petals and pearl details, it’s sophisticated yet edgy.
When you think natural, chances are plants and intricate leafy designs spring to mind. Well they do for me anyway – as I have jewellery on the brain!
Leafy shapes make really stunning accessories, especially when you combine them with this season’s gothic trend.
These gorgeous black enamel leaf earrings are beautiful for all occasions, with the versatile colour helping to make a statement and the crystal glass stone decoration making them perfect for parties.
Alternatively, why not check out this metallic leaf rings with crystal glass stones and dangly details for a more rustic look?
Woodland critters are quintessentially British, from foxes to squirrels to owls and badgers.
These iconic images also make really cute charms on jewellery, helping you to throw yourself into the country chic look.
The earrings have a metallic wing dangling from each while the statement necklace uses layers of them to create fab feathery details.
Plus, they make a super Christmas gift for friends and family who could do with a style update!
